MidSummer August New Moon Sister Birthday Specialness

Untitled design (14).png

Hello friend! Happy August to you!

Isn’t August a wonderful month? It’s one of my favourite months - alongside January, February, March da da da . . .

I love all the months and seasons and delight in the extreme temperature changes and storms but August has been especially good to me and holds a special place in my heart.

August Women I love & celebrate

My mother will be celebrating her 80th turn around the sun on the 24th, in Liverpool, watching the home team play Arsenal at Anfield. I will be joining her along with a handful of relatives and friends but more on that another time.

My little sister was born on the 1st in 1972.

My sister-in-law entered this world on the 5th in 1961.

I was born on the 19th of this month back in 1966.

Right now I would like to take a moment of your time and celebrate the high frequency and specialness of this day on this planet in this universe and not just for my family but for all of us.

Today is the middle day of summer; we have lived as many days of summer 2019 as are left.

Middle is a lovely place to be, to sit and look around because you can see on all sides, your view expands. I believe middle dwellers see the most. Are you a middle dweller?

Whoever you are I hope you have rejoiced in the sunshine and laughed a lot, perhaps you have enjoyed an ice cream or frozen treat, had a bbq, did a little wild swimming, sunbathed and moonbathed in equal measure, grown and picked flowers in happy colours and given a few to people you love, (even if you don’t grow them, it’s always a good idea to gift flowers. They make everyone a little happier for a while.)

My point is I hope you have lived a lot. This is our only life, let’s be sure to LIVE it and not hide behind screens and filters. I want a three dimensional life - especially in summer when the sun and the warmth in Toronto allows me to roll down my windows and LISTEN to the sound of the city. I love the sound of motorcycles as they rumble pass in their low key high volume way. I dig listening to what other drivers are listening to in their vehicles, sharing via the open window that actually means an open window and not some computer kidnapping of the word.

The warm weather invites lingering .

If you haven’t had a chance to stop, be quiet, listen, breathe, calibrate your senses to your inner code knowing as you do that you are the coder.

The symbolism of the new moon is a fresh start, a beginning of another rotation between the moon and sun.

Ahead, there are 45 more days of summer to savour. What do you want to do? Have you thought about that much? Forget what the world is doing. I believe that only when we disconnect from technology and outer sources of noisy distraction can we completely and clearly hear our intuition speaking to us. It’s always there, but usually we’re too busy and our life is too loud to hear the hushed urgings of the inner. The soul. The core of a human. What does your soul yearn for? What would get you jumping out of bed in the morning to get back to it? What is your passion? How best will you serve yourself and your potential and also add to the greater good?

Please, I implore you, don’t just skim read this and delete. Take a moment. Reflect. If not now, make a date with yourself in the next day or two and commune with your true self.

Whatever you find there or maybe you don’t have to think too hard because you know, well just go ahead and allow yourself to pursue that dream. It doesn’t have to be a full time or financial decision, it could perhaps be to write, or paint, or take pictures, or do anything creative. It could mean taking a tiny put powerful step in the direction of your dream, like sending an email or writing a poem or calling an old friend. Every journey begins with one step and continues in the same manner.

It’s our time. Now. Let’s seize the day! Let’s make the world a better place.

As the new moon of last night coincides nicely with the new month of August, today is spectacularily bestowed with good karma to set a new intention for the month and the moon.

30 days.

How will you use them?

Thirty summer days and thirty summer nights.

I hope they are good.

Godspeed to you my friend; pleasant journey.

Swim Darling, Swim

What will she think of next?

We are so lucky to be alive at this time in history for innumerable reasons but one is the fact that periods and bleeding and how we deal with it is getting a lot of coverage.

YaY! Finally! Only took over two thousand years.

Considering half the population has to deal with such issues for about half of their life, let’s take a moment and recognize and celebrate the fact that this decade is the one where menstruation is finally being spoken of in a full voice and amid mixed company. The struggle was real but we are taking back our bodies NOW! Whoop. Yes!

The latest product to come to my attention is period swimwear. Have you heard of it?

The concept is to donne a swimsuit that you can wear on the beach and in the water with no leaking, tell-tale tampon strings sticking out or bulky, water-soaked pads weighing you down. Basically, you can swim to your heart’s content and be confident that nobody will know your are on your period and bleeding. If that is what stopping you from enjoying the pool or beach this summer then why not give these babies a try? I think these are an absolutely perfect idea for the new bleeders out there; wouldn’t a bathing suit that promised protection ease some adolescent anxiety?

If you’re curious as to exactly how these work and what to expect, give this informative and helpful video a view:

Swimming is my favourite sport because it is awesome for your body as it utilizes all major muscle groups. It is also an invigorating cardio exercise and it keeps you in touch with your breath even better that yoga or meditation does - if you loose your breathing rhythm you will know it immediately. Gurgle. Cough! Plus this planet is mostly made up of water. Swim wild darling. Swim free. Forget gravity and technology for a while. Suspend. Float. Look up at the sky.

Of course, if you use a menstrual cup like the marvellous DivaCup for example, you already have an option that allows you to do just about ANYTHING you can do every other time of the month. Seriously, why not give one a try? They now come in 3 sizes -

Model 0 - for those under 18

Model 1 - 19-30 with medium flow

Model 2 - 30+ and/or heavy flow

So whether you wear a tampon, a menstrual cup or a period swimsuit, please, don’t let anything stop you from getting out there and enjoying yourself in the water this summer and for all the other summers of your life.

Peace. Love. Swim. Blood.

Late Night Movie Review

Screen Shot 2019-06-17 at 10.47.11 PM.png

The newly released movie ‘Late Night’ starring the delightful duo of Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling is an intelligent, well-acted, well-written and well-paced gem that is worth both your money and time.

I have long been a fan of Dame Emma Thompson; from her early days in the brilliant ‘Dead Again’ and hilarious ‘Junior’. Her wit, warmth and the twinkle in her eye make her utterly likable and relatable and she has achieved a level of success few attain, amongst the stars - Oscar, BAFTA Award, she’s a Dame omg!

She plays the lead in this movie, Katherine Newbury who has been the host of a late night talk show for decades. Her boss (played with a smoldering intensity by Amy Ryan) informs her that the current season will be her last. Katherine is thunderstruck that the most important thing in the world to her, her show, is being taken away. She must face the truth of sliding ratings and relevance, which she does but being the striver of excellence that she claims to be she also recognizes that she must DO something. She will not go gently into that good night.

Enter Mindy Kaling, a newly hired writer who brings with her an earnestness her boss finds annoying and isn’t afraid to tell her starstruck new hire self. Mindy’s character Molly Patel also possesses loads of youthful enthusiasm and fresh ideas and isn’t afraid to voice them either.

The movie is sharp and speaks eloquently to the starring role that aging plays for women in society today while it should really only be a supporting or bit player. But what I appreciated most about this lovely film is the relationship between Molly and Katherine which resembled a romance between women. They start in a power imbalance with Katherine being the well known and rewarded *Star and Molly a first-time writer having coming directly from a job for quality control at a chemical plant. Their relationship is complex and the scenes between the two have a crackling energy that aces the Bechdel test with flying colours.

For those who don’t feel like clicking and need a reminder, in order to pass the Bechdel test the rules are:

1. It has to have at least two [named] women in it

2. Who talk to each other

3. About something besides a man

This movie achieves that desired result and then some; the two female leads are charismatic and enjoy an entirely plausible relationship that is based squarely on their talents and quirky personalities. For this we have the brilliant Mindy Kaling to thank as she wrote this charming and smart movie and I honestly hope she writes more movies and fills the theatres with more smart and snappy female heavy movies.
