As many of you know, yoga is a wonderful exercise regime that is good for the mind, body and soul any day of the month. It reduces stress, helps your fitness and flexibility, and infuses you with energy. But did you know it can also relieve some physical menstrual discomfort and the endorphins it releases can ease your menstrual blues? True.
Yoga is a very personal practice and when one is menstruating (or any day), one should always listen to your body and only do poses and extensions that feel good (even if in a slightly painful way). Some argue that inverted poses (where your feet are raised higher than your head) should not be done while on your period due to the probability of retrograde menstruation - when the blood will flow back into your body instead of out. The potential side effect of this is endometriosis so please practice mindfully.
If you're anything like my youngest daughter, you may be hesitant to join a class at the gym while Aunt Flo is visiting, afraid others might know you're on your period by a telltale bump in your yoga pants or heaven forbid, a leak provoked by extended poses.
