Celebrating Anaïs Nin

On this day in 1903, Anaïs Nin was  born. She was a writer of erotic fiction back in an age (the 1930's) when this was defiantly not the norm, and indeed, her books were so ahead of their time and risqué that they didn't see the light of publication until decades after she wrote them.

When Anaïs was a young woman in Paris, she met fellow writer Henry Miller and they enjoyed a tumultuous and passionate love affair which triggered an intellectual and sensual awakening in Anaïs, which in turn acted as a catalyst for her to write.

I first stumbled upon her work when I was in college and I had never read anything quite like her books 'Little Birds' or 'Delta of Venus' and they prompted an awakening in myself. They shocked me, they delighted me, they showed me that a woman can live a full and sensuous life if only she has the courage to do so. To me, that is a form of empowerment.

I'd like to pay tribute to her here with a dozen of her most beautiful and empowering quotes.
