Sayonara 2018 Sankalpa 2019


Well, another year has come and gone and we’re still around. You and me and Feby.

Feby is going into her 8th year and I honestly am not sure how much longer I can keep up the faith.

I always had 100% faith in Feby and the positive influence it can have over a woman’s life. I still do. I guess if I’m being honest, I’ve lost the faith in myself. I don’t think I can do this anymore. The results are minimal and while I know that has tons to do with the effort, or lack thereof, that I put in just thought I would be much further along than I am right now. I thought I would have trouble keeping up with demand. Sadly, that has never been the case and creating demand has been a long climb to each small success, or so it seems and I am losing energy for the endeavour.

It might have something to do with the menopause. As my own menstrual cycle is winding down and losing strength in my life, so is my connection to the bracelet. It makes me very sad. I wish I had done this sooner or that the world had stayed low tech for just a little while longer. Feby would have hit the big time in the 70’s what with the popularity of gimmicks like the pet rock and hula hoop, not to mention that it was the peak of free love


still I have hope and faith. I truly just want to help young women. Giving up on Feby feels to me like giving up on the idea that teenage girls need to know exactly what is happening in their body all month long and I can never give up on that because girls deserve to know the truth about their bodies irregardless of religion or wealth or circumstance. It should be a basic fundamental female right. It should be demanded. We are failing our youth if we do not provide adequate information for understanding and controlling ones own body and fertility. That prospect is still very much hit and miss depending on the characters in your story; your mom, your female relatives, your friends along with every magazine and website you read habitually. It’s far too random to be taken with any sense of security. If not now, when? If not me, who?

So I’ll give it another year. IF you’re reading this, you can help me. Spread the word. PLEASE. Share the cause. Forward our webpage or a social media post that resonated with you or made you laugh or made you groan (I own my cheesiness proudly.)

Better yet - buy a couple or a couple of dozen bracelets yourself. Donate some to anywhere you choose - your local YMCA or a women’s shelter or homeless shelter of your choosing. Make sure to include a full address and adequate shipping fees and it’s as easy as can be to ensure some innocent young women are being educated.

Know in your heart that you are empowering a woman with each bracelet that is gifted. You are spending the time and effort to let her know that her body and her future and her life have meaning and value and that it is up to nobody but her to direct the course of it.

So while I am not sorry to say goodbye to 2018, I am pleased with so very many things that happened throughout the year including:

I did enjoy a lot of special days - I visited London and Paris and Bermuda this year, all with people I love and who love me. We were all in good health and fine weather and amongst friendly people and left with some happy memories that will last a lifetime.

I read 31 books and joined a book club. I hope to read more in 2019.

I watched 29 movies at the local theatre and not many more at home (I’m not much of a netflixer but I will admit to playing the Hallmark Christmas movies all month long while I wrapped gifts and wrote Christmas cards. )


I learned a new skill - well still learning - calligraphy.

.I really enjoy it. It’s a little break in a digital world to go pen and ink and paper in hand but the control and purposefulness of my strokes appeases some whirring within and centres me still.

I’m getting a lot of emails and instagram stories about setting intentions for 2019 and it seems like a wise idea. Begin a new year with a clear vision of what you hope to accomplish and be deliberate and thoughtful about it. Some influencers reference it at Sankalpa. Suzan Colón refers to one in her book ‘Yoga Mind’ as “equal parts promise, resolution, and intention, yet more powerful than any of them.”

My sankalpa for 2019 is to create more and consume less and by that I mean in all the ways that we consume...content and calories and cash. Likewise, I would like to create more in all the ways…content and calories and cash plus connections, cohesion and confidence.

Hopefully this creativity will allow Feby to prosper and empower more woman across the globe.

Hello 2016

Happy New Year, sweet people!

I hope this New Years day finds you feeling well after a night of celebration hopefully doing whatever makes you happy. I am vacationing with my family in the Turks & Caicos, a place I've never been before, and witnessed the most awesome fireworks display I have ever seen in my 50 years. This beautiful tiny island nation of 33 thousand souls put on a pyrotechnic party that puts great cities to shame. Check out this quick little movie I made with clips from my iPhone.

Just like the dazzling display of last night, I welcome 2016 with fire and hope.

I'm not crazy about resolutions and found this lovely quote while suffering from post-party instomnia* last night.  

"Ditch the resolutions.

To resolve means to find a solution to a problem.

You are not a problem.

Now is a time to reflect. To learn.

So instead of resolutions,  how about setting some intentions for 2016 instead? 

Mine appear simple and yet require commitment and energy. My goal is to start strong and gain strength as I go. 

To move more. I'm not going to say "going to the gym" because sometimes just taking my loving dog for a brisk walk in the snow provides more endorphins and makes me feel more alive than a weight lifting session ever could.

To listen deeper. I will admit that I am a pretty good listener. I focus when somebody takes the time to tell me something. I remember things they say that perhaps even they forget (hint - this makes gift giving much easier, especially for the difficult sort). I want to hone this skill even more. I wish to provide an open heart and mind for whomever wishes to unburden themselves to me and for them to feel heard. It takes a special kind of listening to feel heard. I aim to own that special kind of ear. 

I am committed to connecting and engaging with more people, about more matters, than ever - and not just via social media but irl. I vow to accept more invitations and plan a few outings myself and invite friends and neighbours I've lost touch with. I duly acknowledge that I have nobody to blame but myself for these untethered relations and hope to get them back and better than ever. 

As mentioned above, 2016 is the year I shall turn 50. I am not upset about this, nor terrified about aging. In fact, I welcome the maturity and wisdom that has been hard won thus far. A few wrinkles on my face or grey hairs on my head do not make me feel less than. I wish I could bottle this absence of care and gift my friends and family with it, especially those so insecure that they fail to enjoy all the blessings they have been bestowed with for fear of looking less than. I am also grateful for my health and lack of pain and know this shall not last forever and enjoy each and every single day that it does.
