International Women's Day

Today is International Women's Day. It is a chance to recognize and honour those who have struggled and fought for women's rights around the world and those who continue to do so.

Yesterday there was a United Nations assembly held in honour of IWD and the title and focus was "Equality for women means progress for all."

Speeches were delivered by Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary-General; John W. Ashe, President of the 68th session of the UN General Assembly; Hillary Rodham Clinton, Former United States Secretary of State, U.S. Senator; Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women.

Highlights include:

"To every girl born today, and to every woman and girl on the planet, our message is that human rights are not a dream.

They are they are a duty for which we must all work until they are universally realized."

  - UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

The launch of #HeforShe campaign which asks men to raise their voices for equality.

WD2014 is an opportunity to mark the gains we have made together but also to recognize the gaps that still remain for women and girls all over the world.
— Hillary Rodham Clinton

The need for International Women's Day is unfortunately still very necessary. Just take a quick look at this interactive guide to women's rights around the world and see where progress has been made, and where it is still very much needed.

Won't you join me in taking the time today to honour and celebrate all those who have endeavoured to make the world a place where equality exists for all?
