International Day of the Girl

Today marks the 3rd International Day of the Girl as designated by the United Nations.

Because I Am a Girl campaigned long and hard to make this day a reality in the hopes of decreasing the discrimination and societal barriers that hinder girls from reaching their full potential. Too many girls around the world are not given the right to education, to choose who and when they'll marry and if and how many children they will have. This leads to a cycle of poverty and lost potential and the communities where this happens suffer the consequences for generations.

It is especially fitting this year as just yesterday Malala Yousafzai was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her tireless and brave fight for educational rights for girls in her home country of Pakistan and beyond. Malala is the youngest ever recipient of this esteemed prize and was awarded it for her extraordinary courage in the face of oppression and violence after being shot by the Taliban and yet still refusing to stop fighting for her (and all girls) right to an education.

It saddens me that in this day and age we still must campaign for equality and freedom simply because of gender.  Until the issue is resolved and every girl has the right to an education and to personal freedom and safety we must do whatever we can to help our sisters in need.

Today I donated to Because I Am a Girl to enable them to empower more girls.

Won't you join me and act now?  You can donate money and/or your time, share stories and inspiration, create your own girls club and much more.

Together, we can change the world and create a #BrighterFuture for all.
