Today, April 3rd, is the 97th birthday of the incomparable Ms. Doris Day.
Many in the younger generation may not know who this woman is but let me tell you a bit about Doris Day -
Doris was America’s sweetheart when she was in her prime in the 50’s and 60’s. She not only recorded more than 650 songs but she also starred in dozens of popular movies including April in Paris, Please Don’t Eat the Daisies and Pillow Talk. She often portrayed an independent working woman and had an easy smile and twinkle in her eye that translated remarkably well on film. Back in her heyday she was the top singing star on the planet and she positively influenced many a young girl, myself included.
Doris Day’s singing voice is golden. There’s just something about her lovely tone and delivery that never fails to cheer me up and put a smile on my face. Just listen to her sing her most famous song ‘Que Sera Sera’
In her later years Doris became an advocate for animals rights and not only denounced wearing fur as early as 1971 (enlisting support from other stars including Mary Tyler Moore) but she also created the Doris Day Animal Foundation to help animals find homes, get spayed and ensure their general well-being. This foundation still exists and she has also helped other animal organizations and endeavours.
I found this quote from her and think it exemplifies her life and ambitions perfectly and I hope her birthday is happy with the knowledge that she accomplished all she set out to.
